Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and what better way to show your love than with some homemade treats? These simple Valentine’s Pretzels are not only delicious but also make a great edible gift. And the best part? They only require three ingredients! Keep reading to learn how to make these sweet, salty, cute pretzels that will win the heart of your loved ones.

Valentine’s Pretzel Ingredients

  • Pretzels: To maintain the heart-shaped theme of this treat, I recommend using pretzel twists, since they provide a heart shape. However, snap pretzels are a great alternative as well. Avoid using butter-flavored pretzels as they can detract from the flavor of the chocolate.
  • Chocolates: You have several options for topping your Valentine’s Pretzels. We suggest using Dove chocolate hearts to keep with the Valentine’s Day theme. There are several options when purchasing Dove chocolate hearts–milk, dark, or milk and dark chocolate swirl. Other options include chocolate kisses (in any flavor), Hugs candies, and Rolos. You can also combine different types of chocolate to create a platter of visually appealing and delicious treats. (Heads-up: Regular chocolate kisses and Rolos tend to melt better than Hugs, but all are delicious choices.)
  • M&M’s: Use Valentine’s Day M&M’s or simply pick out the red ones from a standard package to add the finishing pop of color and sweetness to these treats.

QUICK TIP

Doves, Hugs, Rolos, and M&M’s are all trademarked candy brands. We use the brand names to help illustrate the process, since these well-known products produce a mental image that just about everyone knows. We respect patents and trademarks!

Valentine’s Pretzel Quick Tips:

  • Line the pans: To make cleanup a breeze and ensure the candies stick nicely to the pretzels, use parchment paper or a silicone liner to prepare the pans before adding the pretzels.
  • Watch carefully: Keep a close eye on the chocolates while they’re in the oven. Overbaking can cause them to become too melty and difficult to work with.
  • Work quickly: Once the chocolates melt, work quickly to press in the M&M’s before the chocolates harden too much.
  • Embrace imperfections: Keep in mind that the Hugs candies can spread quite a bit once they’re baked and may not spread evenly over the pretzels. Even if they don’t all look perfect, they’ll still taste delicious! (Shortening the baking time or using a lower oven temperature may not melt the chocolates enough to press the M&M’s in properly.)
  • Not allowing the chocolate to set: Be sure to let the chocolate set completely before storing or packaging the pretzels.

Process shots: Pretzels placed on a lined pan; chocolate added; pan is baked; chocolates are topped with red candies.

VARIATIONS

Variation ideas for Valentine’s pretzels

  • Different chocolate: Experiment with different types of chocolate, such as dark chocolate or a milk and dark chocolate swirl, for a unique taste.
  • Nuts: Add some finely chopped nuts, like almonds, pecans, or hazelnuts, on top of the chocolate before it hardens for a crunchy texture and added flavor.
  • Sprinkles: Use Valentine’s-themed sprinkles on top of the chocolate before it hardens for a festive and colorful touch.
  • White chocolate: Drizzle melted white chocolate on top of the finished pretzels for a visually appealing and tasty variation.
  • Sea salt: Sprinkle some flaky sea salt over the chocolate while it’s still warm for a perfect balance of sweet and salty.

STORAGE

Storage

  • Valentine’s Pretzels can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
  • Store in a cool, dry place to keep the chocolate from melting and the pretzels from becoming stale. If you live in a hot or humid area, it’s better to keep them in the refrigerator to prevent the chocolate from melting. Separate the layers of pretzels with parchment or wax paper to prevent treats from sticking together.
  • Freeze for up to 2 months. Make sure to package them in an airtight container to prevent moisture and freezer burn.

Instructions

  • PREP: Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F and line a large sheet pan or two smaller sheet pans with a silicone liner or parchment paper. (Don't skip lining the pan!)
  • BAKE: Place the pretzels on the prepared sheet pan and top each pretzel with an unwrapped chocolate. Bake in the preheated oven for 2-4 minutes (See Note 3.) or until the chocolates are soft but not melted.
  • M&M'S: Once out of the oven, press an M&M on the center of each chocolate covered pretzel.
  • ALLOW TO SET UP: Allow the pretzels to cool and the chocolate to fully harden before eating. This should take about 1 hour at room temperature or for faster results, put the tray in the fridge for about 15 minutes. We love eating these straight from the fridge!

Recipe Notes

Note 1: Pretzels: To maintain the heart-shaped theme of this treat, I recommend using pretzel twists. However, snap pretzels are a great alternative as well. Avoid using butter-flavored pretzels as they can detract from the flavor of the chocolate.
Note 2: Chocolates: We use Dove chocolate hearts to keep with the Valentine's Day theme. Other options include chocolate kisses (in any flavor), Hugs candies, or Rolos. You can also combine different types of chocolate to create a platter of visually appealing and delicious treats. (Heads-up: Regular chocolate kisses and Rolos tend to melt better than Hugs, but all are delicious choices.)
Note 3: Baking time: If the chocolate is crumbling, it means the oven was too hot or the chocolate was baked too long. If the M&M's won't press in nicely, the oven was too cool or chocolate wasn't baked long enough. To ensure proper baking time, bake one pretzel with chocolate as a test run before baking the rest of the batch. This way, you can gauge the appropriate timing for your specific oven, as ovens can vary. Once you've tested it, you'll know the timing for the rest in your particular oven! Convection oven settings should not be used for this recipe.
