Air Fryer Chickpeas Seasoning

I have made many roasted chickpeas and air-fried chickpeas over the years– and my biggest complaint is that there is never enough flavor/seasoning! I prefer well-coated and heavily seasoned chickpeas and that is exactly what this recipe delivers!

That way, when you throw the chickpeas in a salad, wrap, sandwich, etc. you won’t just lose the chickpeas to the other flavors in the dish, but you’ll still be able to taste ’em! Win-win! The seasoning on these chickpeas really work across all kinds of cuisines and dishes, but the base is a Mexican-inspired blend.

[quickitp] Chickpeas are also called Garbanzo Beans (they’re one and the same) or sometimes cici beans. [/quicktip]

Are Air Fried Chickpeas Healthy?

Yes! Crispy chickpeas are a great source of plant-based protein and fiber, making them very satiating. Cooking them in the air fryer also keeps them nice and healthful since they aren’t being fried in oil.

We love adding Air Fryer Chickpeas to recipes as a flavor boost and nutrition add

How To Cook Chickpeas In Air Fryer

This is one of my favorite ways to prepare chickpeas, because they are so easy to make in the air fryer.

Chickpeas in an air fryer roast quicker and you don’t have to wait for the oven to preheat.

Here’s the exact air fryer I use and love. Air fryers do vary a bit from brand to brand, so the timing for chickpeas may need to be slightly tweaked for your specific model. Luckily it’s easy to do– taste an Air Fried Chickpea at the minimum time and then add time as needed, based on personal crispiness preference.

Why Are My Chickpeas Not Crispy?

Most likely because the chickpeas were not dry enough.

The number one tip to perfect crisp chickpeas: make sure the chickpeas are very dry before tossing them with oil and spices. Spices won’t adhere well to wet chickpeas, and they’ll end up steaming more than roasting/frying with excess liquid.

Chickpeas can also end up not crispy if there is too much in the Air Fryer basket. Keep the chickpeas in one even layer as much as possible keeping them from overlapping. (We don’t recommend doubling this recipe — instead prepare the chickpeas twice).

VARIATIONS

Change it up!

  • Air Fryer Chickpeas With No Oil: We highly recommend using some oil to keep the chickpeas from getting too crispy/burnt/dried, but you can use an olive oil-based spray instead of oil if desired. Be generous!
  • Change up the flavors by altering the spices. Keep spice quantities the same and mix and match the spices for different flavor profiles (like Mediterranean, Indian, Italian, etc.).

STORAGE

How Do You Store Air Fryer Chickpeas?

These legumes are best right out of the air fryer– they will soften as they stand/sit.

We store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge and then just pop them back in the air fryer for a few minutes to re-crisp the next day!

What Can I Serve With Air Fryer Chickpeas?

These chickpeas are delicious right out of the air fryer, but we like them best on a salad or in a wrap. Here are some dishes where we love these chickpeas:

Ingredients

  • 1 can (15.5 oz.) chickpeas (also called garbanzo beans), drained, rinsed, and well-dried (Note 1)
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1-1/2 teaspoon ground chili powder (Note 2)
  • 1/2 teaspoon each: ground cumin, paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon each: onion powder, garlic powder, dried oregano
  • Fine sea salt & pepper

Instructions

  • PREP: Drain and rinse chickpeas then thoroughly dry. I like to add them to a salad spinner and spin until very dry. The drier the chickpeas, the better they'll crisp up!
  • COMBINE: In a medium-sized bowl, add completely dried chickpeas and the rest of the ingredients listed. Season to taste with salt and pepper. (I add 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper.) Toss well.
  • AIR FRY: Transfer chickpeas to the air fryer basket in one even layer (if they're overlapping, they won't fry as nicely -- fry in batches if needed). Air fry at 390 degrees F. for 10-15 minutes (Note 3) or until crisp, but not hard. Shake the air fryer basket at the halfway point to ensure even frying.
  • STORAGE: Chickpeas are best right out of the air fryer and they will soften as they stand/sit. We store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge and then just pop them back in the air fryer for a few minutes to re-crisp the next day!

Recipe Notes

Note 1: Chickpeas: The number one tip to perfect crisp chickpeas: make sure the chickpeas are very dry before tossing them with oil and spices. Spices won’t adhere well to wet chickpeas, and they’ll end up steaming more than roasting with excess liquid. Chickpeas can also end up not crispy if there are too many of them in the air fryer basket. Keep the chickpeas in one even layer as much as possible, keeping them from overlapping. (If you double the recipe, count on a longer cook time and slightly less crisp chickpeas!)
Note 2: Chili powder: Be sure to use chili powder — not to be confused with chilli powder which is very hot. We’re using American chili powder (I use McCormick® which is very mild).
Note 3: Timing: Since all air fryers cook slightly differently, use the cooking time as a rough estimate and check on your chickpeas frequently during the last 5 minutes of cooking.

  1. Hi Chelsea, I make many of your recipes and enjoy each and every one of them. I just saw this recipe and would like to make them in a conventional oven. Would I just use the same temp and keep them in a little longer? I know….there’s always one that has to ask ;-). If you incorporate these in recipes, do share. Thanks for all the yumminess you share!

    1. Hey Eva! Thanks so much, that means a lot to me 🙂 Yes you can do them in the oven for sure! Roast at 400 degrees F for 18-22 minutes, shaking the tray at the halfway mark. (We like them best at 20 minutes.) Enjoy!
