My mom loves cold drinks — smoothies, milkshakes, an açaí bowl — you name it. Growing up she went through a phase where she was making smoothies (similar to this immune boosting smoothie) every morning. After burning through three inexpensive blenders in about 6 months, she finally decided to invest in a high powered (Blendtec®) blender.

And from the minute we got that blender, life was never the same. She was obsessed with it — making smoothies several times a day and milkshakes almost every Friday night. She’d make chocolate milkshakes, vanilla milkshakes, cookies and cream milkshakes, and a personal favorite: strawberry milkshakes! This is her recipe and one of our family’s favorites. It’s simple, delicious, and completely crave-able!

How to make a Strawberry Milkshake

Milkshakes are one of the easiest desserts to make; it’s as simple as adding everything to a blender and letting it rip!

Here are the ingredients we use in a strawberry milkshake:

  • Sliced strawberries: I recommend using fresh sliced ripe strawberries. Frozen strawberries are harder to blend down and incorporate into the ice cream without the milkshake thinning too much.
  • Vanilla bean ice cream: The ice cream forms the base of this milkshake, so it’s important to get good-quality ice cream — you’ll taste it in the milkshake. Not sure what ice cream to use? The Epicurious team tested and rated their favorites!
  • Whole milk: You can use 2%, whole milk, or a blend of milk and half-and-half. The higher the fat content of the milk, the creamier and richer the milkshake will be.
  • Vanilla extract: While an optional ingredient, the vanilla adds a rich “restaurant-quality” flavor to the milkshake.

Strawberry Milkshake Tips

  • Put the milkshake serving glass(es) in the fridge before making the shake to ensure an extra-frozen, delicious milkshake.
  • For a thicker milkshake, start with less milk, and for a thinner milkshake, add extra milk.
  • Make sure to wash and completely dry your strawberries before slicing them for the milkshake.

QUICK TIP

Even powerful blenders can use some help. If your ice cream is hard as a rock, take it out of the freezer and let it soften ever so slightly for a few minutes.

Strawberry Milkshake Variations

  • Use strawberry ice cream: For a double-strawberry flavor, use a good-quality strawberry ice cream (no fake flavors or dyes).
  • Make it a strawberry malt: Add 1-2 tablespoons malted milk powder or regular powdered milk
  • Thin it out: If you like a milkshake that is easy to sip through a straw, add a bit more milk. We like our milkshakes thick and spoonable!
  • Add some more mix-ins: The options are endless! Stir in a few more fresh chopped-up strawberries or leftover chopped cheesecake chunks. Garnish your milkshake with a big swirl of whipped cream and crushed up freeze-dried strawberries!
  • Sweeter shake: If the strawberries you are using aren’t very sweet, add 1-2 tablespoons sugar to the mixture.

Ingredients

  • 1 and 1/2 cups fresh ripe strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract optional
  • 2 packed cups vanilla bean ice cream use a good-quality brand
  • 3/4 to 1 cup whole milk
  • Optional additions: 1-2 tablespoons powdered milk or malt powder, 1-2 tablespoons white sugar (if strawberries aren't ripe enough)
  • Optional toppings: a swirl of whipped topping and crushed up freeze-dried strawberries

Instructions

  • PREP: Chill a glass (See Note 1). Wash and dry the strawberries. Remove the stems and slice the strawberries to get 1 and 1/2 cups.
  • BLEND: In a high-powered blender, combine the freshly cut strawberries, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 2 cups vanilla bean ice cream, and 3/4 to 1 cup milk (depending on desired thickness; 3/4 cup will be thicker). If desired, add in malt powder and white sugar. Blend until smooth. Don't over blend, as that will water down/thin out the milkshake.
  • SERVE: Pour the milkshake into a cold glass and top with whipped cream and any other toppings of your choice. We like adding some crushed up freeze-dried strawberries on top of the whipped cream.

Recipe Notes

Note 1: Before starting the milkshake, put your glass in the freezer to get it cold!

  1. Yes! Strawberry is my favorite flavor and Wendy’s absolutely should have strawberry frosties. But, I’m totally stoked about making this at home. #client
